Day
Queen of Peace High School
– Burbank, IL
Throughout her presentation, Brauer
challenged the young women of Peace. “As women, we do not have
to choose either careers in technical fields or careers in
caretaking fields. I challenge you to be a caretaker of the
environment, of animals, and of people by becoming an
engineer. Every time-saving, energy-saving, life-saving device
in your lives – even medications – are touched by engineers,”
Brauer stated.
“As engineers, we use knowledge for practical
application. Like me, you too, can create and supply the
life-saving tools and equipment that hospitals, paramedics,
and police departments need,” Brauer told students.

Susan Brauer,
visited the school recently to talk to students and to discuss her
book, Just Keep Dancing.about the benefits of pursuing a career in
engineering“I didn’t want to
write a how-to book,” Brauer says. “I wanted to open a space in
women’s hearts and brains where I could slip my messages in and
change their lives in a positive way.” She adds that she removed
very little of the story in editing, noting, “Anything I removed
would be less than honest to you, the reader.”

I believe Susan's presentation about her personal
experience with domestic violence, and her willingness to
share the personal face of surviving and thriving makes a real
difference for those trying to understand "why do people
stay?" "how do people get in that situation" and "is there any
hope for them after the abuse?"
